Dr. Patrick Behrendt

Patrick Behrendt, MD
is a medical doctor and clinician scientist in the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology in the Hannover Medical School, Germany (headed by Prof. H. Wedemeyer). During his clinical duties, he is primarily involved in treating patients with viral hepatitis and end-stage liver diseases. In 2019, he established his own research group “Translational Virology” within the Institute for Experimental Virology in the TWINCORE Institute, which is a joint venture between the Medical School in Hannover and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, Germany. His team utilizes a robust Hepatitis E cell-culture system to study antiviral strategies, tropism and modes of protection against this pathogen. Main translational aspects are also the identification of (new) drugs, which may influence the viral life-cycle and clinical outcome of infection as well as the identification of potent human neutralizing antibodies as therapeutic option. Together with Sven Pischke (UKE, Hamburg, Germany) he is Coordinator of the topic “Hepatitis E” within the German Centre of Infection Research (TTU Hepatitis).
